Repair Café in Luxembourg: Fix It, Don’t Toss It!

If you’ve been living in Luxembourg for a while, you probably know how expensive it can be to replace even the smallest household item. A toaster stops working? New one. Jacket zipper breaks? Buy another coat. Coffee machine acting up? Time for an upgrade.
But what if you didn’t have to throw things away so quickly?
Welcome to the Repair Café movement in Luxembourg — a community-driven initiative that’s quietly making a big difference across the country.

What is a Repair Café?
A Repair Café is a free community event where volunteers help you fix your broken items instead of throwing them away. Think of it as a pop-up repair workshop hosted in local communal spaces.
The concept originally started in the Netherlands and spread across Europe, and today Luxembourg has embraced it through local initiatives, often supported by communes and sustainability groups like CELL (Centre for Ecological Learning Luxembourg).
The idea is simple:
You bring a broken item.
Skilled volunteers try to repair it with you.
You learn something in the process.
And ideally, you leave with your item working again.
All of this — for free.

What can you bring?
It depends on the session and the available volunteers, but typically you can bring:
Small electrical appliances (toasters, lamps, coffee machines)
Clothes and textiles (zippers, seams, small alterations)
Small furniture
Toys
Basic electronics
Sometimes even bicycles
It’s not a professional repair service, so there’s no guarantee your item can be fixed — but many things surprisingly can!

Why it matters (especially in Luxembourg)
Luxembourg takes sustainability seriously. With initiatives aligned to the national zero-waste strategy and circular economy goals, Repair Cafés fit perfectly into the country’s environmental mindset.
By repairing instead of replacing, you:
Reduce waste
Save money
Lower your environmental footprint
Connect with your local community
For expats, it’s also a great way to meet people outside of your usual social circle. You’ll find Luxembourgers, long-time residents, and newcomers all working side by side over screwdrivers and sewing machines.
It’s also about community
Repair Cafés aren’t just about fixing stuff. They’re social events.
There’s usually coffee, sometimes cake, and always conversation. Even if your item can’t be repaired, you’ll probably walk away having learned something — or at least having had a good chat.
In a country where many expats sometimes struggle to feel integrated, this is a surprisingly easy way to feel part of something local.
When and where?
Repair Cafés happen throughout the year in different communes across Luxembourg. Some communes host them regularly; others organize special editions during sustainability weeks or local fairs.
Here, you can find the upcoming Repair Café dates in different communes.
Repair Cafés remind us that sustainability doesn’t have to be complicated — it starts with repairing instead of replacing, rethinking everyday habits, and making smarter choices at home.
